AWRC Visiting Scholars

Wolfson College offers visiting scholarships for established researchers in any area of Ancient World Studies.

Applications are invited for AWRC Visiting Scholars to engage in research on any aspect of the ancient world.

AWRC Visiting Scholars will be established academics (normally those who have reached at least the rank of Associate Professor) who have a distinguished track record in their field. AWRC Visiting Scholars will undertake their own research while benefitting from the intellectual support of the Ancient World Research Cluster and Wolfson College. Please explain how your stay in Oxford specifically will contribute to your research.

AWRC Visiting Scholars will be granted Membership of Common Room by the Governing Body of Wolfson College, entitling the Scholar to a University Card; use of the Bodleian Libraries as well as the College library; use of College sports facilities and room hire, and eligibility to participate in College clubs and societies; participation in Guest Night dinners (held weekly during term) and the right to bring guests to dine in Hall for lunch or dinner.

AWRC Visiting Scholars will be provided with a weekly allowance for meals in Hall and an allowance towards the cost of housing either in College, if suitable accommodation can be provided by the Accommodation Office, or outside College if nothing suitable is available.

How to apply

Visiting Scholars will be required to plan their visits to include one or more Oxford University terms, since the AWRC does not generally run events or meetings outside term. In the first instance, send by email at least six months before your proposed visit to the AWRC Administrator at <ancient.world@wolfson.ox.ac.uk> a brief CV; a proposal (not more than one page) outlining your projected research; and the dates between which you wish to take up the scholarship.  The AWRC Administrator will be able to advise on procedure, including the completion of the forms required by the College, once your initial application has been received.

Please note that elections of Visiting Scholars by the College take place only six times a year within the academic year, which runs from October to June, and that only completed applications can be considered, so it is prudent to contact the Administrator as early as possible to avoid delay in approval of your application.

The AWRC Visiting Scholars scheme, which provides allowances for meals and housing, is highly competitive. If you wish to be considered also for election by the College as a fully self-funded Visiting Scholar under the standard College scheme, you will need to make a separate application to the College (for the procedures, see the information provided on the College website at <wolfson.ox.ac.uk/membership-charges>).
