Maria (Maria Theodora Tzeli) holds a BA+MA in Architecture-Architectural Engineering from the National Technical University of Athens, an MSc in Architectural Conservation from the University of Edinburgh, and an MPhil in Classical Archaeology from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. She is currently studying for a DPhil in Classical Archaeology at the University of Oxford (Wolfson College) as a Clarendon Scholar. Her doctoral research involves timber roof construction and temple architecture in the Roman Empire.
At the end of her first year in Oxford, she travelled to the Middle East to visit monuments that are of particular significance for her study; her trip was funded by the Lorne Thyssen Research Fund by the Ancient World Research Cluster Group and the Craven Committee Research Grant.
Her research interests include monumental and vernacular architecture, building technology and conservation techniques from Archaic Greece to the Roman Empire, questions of cultural exchange and transformation in the Ancient Mediterranean and Near Eastern World, as well as archaeology of ancient religion and ritual.
